GRECO is an innovative Horizon Europe project designed to address key challenges in the bioeconomy and sustainability sectors. Coordinated by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the project brings together a consortium of experts from twelve European countries working towards impactful solutions that advance the bio-based industry.
GRECO develops new food packaging solutions based on bio-based, biodegradable and recyclable materials, focusing on PLA-based packaging designed to meet strict food safety standards while being easier to recycle or compost.
E-OilÉ is a Horizon Europe-funded research and innovation project developing safe, sustainable, and biodegradable monodose packaging solutions for oily food and cosmetic products. The project addresses the environmental challenges associated with single-use plastic packaging, particularly monodose formats that are difficult to recycle through conventional systems.
E-OilÉ combines materials science, digital modelling aided by Artificial Intelligence, and environmental assessment to develop high-performance biodegradable materials suitable for demanding applications, such as oily products. The project applies the Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) principles and valorises European olive oil by-products by using them as renewable feedstocks to produce the novel biopolyesters.
This projects, that counts with 15 partners from 9 countries will valdidare and evaluate the materials across the full life cycle, including industrial processability, food and cosmetic contact safety, biodegradability in multiple environments, and techno-economic and environmental performance. The project also integrates AI-aided digital twins to support predictive biodegradability testing and accelerate material optimisation.
Through close collaboration between research organisations, industry partners, and technology providers, E-OilÉ aims to deliver market-ready packaging solutions that contribute to Europe’s transition toward a circular, low-impact packaging system aligned with EU sustainability and regulatory objectives.
